Mulled Cider

Mulled Cider | At Down Under | Viviane Perenyi

Paprika and I are eagerly awaiting the delivery of our stuff. It’s like we have lived out of a suitcase for a month now and we look forward to making our new place feel like a home.

The current situation made me think about this notion of comfort strongly associated with the one of home.

It reminded me that winter night in Wellington, and how we felt cosy inside while sipping the mulled cider I had prepared. Dinner was slowly cooking and the warm and aromatic beverage was our apéro that evening.

If like me, you appreciate wine and spices, but have never been a fan of mulled wine, this cider version, somehow lighter, is worth trying.

I look forward to this new week.
Because after the last disappointing one I had, this week will be under the sign of meeting. Like minded people. And that’s a good perspective…

In the same idea of gathering, Barbara is hosting a special Hay Hay it’s Donna Day and inviting everyone to share a drink to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Donna Hay Magazine.
I contribute to this virtual bar with an orangeade with rhubarb granita. A beverage to keep cool kids and grown ups alike…

While most of you are getting cosy in the northern hemisphere, here, days are getting longer. Yes, summer is almost at our door step. Or at least it feels like that some days…

This post is therefore a visual ode to the beautiful season, to warmer and light-filled days, to the return of open shoes and laid-back atmosphere…

Orangeade & Rhubarb Granita
(Makes about 4 cups)

6 oranges
500ml (2cups) water
50g (1/3cup) sugar

250ml (1cup) water
5 tbsp rhubarb syrup

The day before, prepare the granita. Mix in a shallow container water and rhubarb syrup and freeze overnight. Then with a fork break the flavoured ice.
Prepare the orangeade mixing the fresh orange juice, water and sugar until sugar is dissolved. You may add sugar depending on how sweet your oranges are.
Serve cold with a slice of lime, ice cubes and rhubarb granita on top.

So here we are, at the end of the week and me wondering what I did with it…

This week has been under the sign of sickness -for Paprika- and an obvious lack of energy for me. Happy anyway to have been spared from virus so prone to spread.

So I keep it simple if not basic this week. Fruits and a dash of coconut cream blended into a smoothie.
I’ve prepared this for several days in a row, hopefully to give us a boost with a good intake of vitamins.

I want to keep this good and new habit. And with Summer approaching, fruit choice will be greater and combinations will be endless…

I’ve also had a long conversation with my sisters on Skype yesterday.
Always a good time.
We chatted and laughed a lot too.
And I felt all energized afterwards despite the late hour.
Unexpectedly, laughter had simply worked as an excellent vitality boost…
