L'île intense, that's the motto of my home island: La Réunion. And intense indeed was my journey there. Three weeks spent reconnecting with family, friends and the land that saw me grow up. Seven years have passed since my previous visit. So I notice many changes and at the same time everything remains familiar.

Looking back, there's a couple of words that come into my mind to describe this place dear to me: multiple, contrast and blend. Landscape, people, food or culture, they all can relate to those words.

This journey is an opportunity for me to revisit old favourites and discover new spots too. With my sisters, I stroll in the streets, dotted with renovated or old houses that add character to cities and little towns. We also drive on one of the winding roads to the central and mountainous part of the island, listed world heritage site by UNESCO, and walk in a small fraction of the national park. I feel small and humble surrounded by the vertiginous slopes. Back to the coast, we visit the East, primarily land of agriculture, dominated by patchwork of cane fields; The South, le sud sauvage as we call it, shaped by the presence of the nearby and active volcano, la Fournaise; And the West, home to beaches, surfers and paragliders. I enjoy all the best each place has to offer.

People are also the ones who make La Réunion so special. It's a blend, the result of history that brought many ethnic groups to live together and gave birth to a racial and colourful mix. I smile when my little niece brings me a card game -Happy Families- to play with her. She hands me over the cards and I discover that the game given to her at school counts seven families named Kaf' (from East Africa), Yab' (from Europe & France), Chinois (from Canton, China), Malbar (from South India), Zarab' (from Gujarat, India), Malgache (from Madagascar) and Zoreil (French). Later on this day, I dine with my old school friends and around the table we are like a microcosm of the reunionnaise population.

As diverse as the population, the reunionnaise food is influenced by the different cultures present on the island. I savour all the food I did not get a chance to eat for so long: Traditional creole dish, such as cari bichique; little snacks such as samousa and bouchon bought in small roadside trucks; romazava (meat stew from Madagascar) expertly prepared by my mother; wonton soup (my favourite soup of all time); spicy achard (vegetable salsa); boucané (kind of smoked bacon); sarcive sausage; fresh coconut flesh and juice; juicy mango, sweet Victoria pineapple... And to top it all, a lot of ice-creams !

In my sister's garden there's the delicate fragrance of ylang-ylang and frangipani flowers; And at night, ephemeral pithaya flowers open wide and attract bees in number. I have the chance to be greeted by a l'endormi (panther chameleon) a couple of days after my arrival. And we catch sight of slender paille-en-queues (whitetailed tropicbirds) in the sky, on our way to the south. A short walk in the primary forest of Mare-Longue, a stroll in a botanic garden and the visit of a farm make us discover many other plants as interesting and colourful. The volcanic soil is indeed an ideal ground for a rich flora that counts many endemic species.

All good things come to an end and before I realise it, it's time for me to say goodbye and board on the plane. I'm so grateful for this trip. A chance for me to keep like a kaleidoscope of colours, aromas, places and moments from mon péi and share it with you...
