Sinemage Figs In Platter

Before I share with you what I've done with the chestnuts, hope you won't mind to go back to last Sunday afternoon...

Paprika and I were on our way back home. And I was watching out the sign on the side of the road. The same one seen on our route to the chestnut orchard. The sign that read 'Figs for Sale'. There was no way I would miss this. To say that I like this fruit is an euphemism.

Actually, as I write down this line, I realise that I do appreciate this time of year. So interesting and rich in colour, flavour and taste. Aromatic quince and feijoa already gracing food stalls; bright persimmons soon to follow; and right now figs !

This fruit always brings back memory of marvelous vacation Paprika and I spent in Puglia. We were in a bed and breakfast and were treated every morning for breakfast with fresh plump figs from the garden. What a fine way to start the day...

Sinemage Fig Goat Cheese Walnut Salad

Unlike chestnut that requires a minimum of preparation, fig can be enjoyed straight away and it's exactly what Paprika and I did when we arrived home. So sweet...

I've also thrown a couple in salad. Combined with goat cheese, chopped walnuts, fresh thyme and a drizzle of honey vinaigrette, it makes an easy yet tasty lunch.

If you know me well enough, you should guess that I've also baked something with. And what about a ricotta, pine nuts and fig tart ? Paprika instantly agreed. It was fairly quick as I just had to pull out from the fridge a pastry I've prepared a couple of days before.

Enjoy !

Sinemage Fig Tartlets in Tray

Ricotta Pine Nut And Fig Tartlettes (makes 6)

Please note: The quantity of pastry is more than needed for 6 tartlets, but you may use the remaining pastry for a quick galette as I did or make a full size tart and in that case you may double the quantities for the filling.

250g short crust pastry (For ingredients and instructions check here)

Filling 110g ricotta 1 egg 40g caster sugar Handful of pine nuts 3 figs, halved

Prepare the short crust pastry and let it rest for an hour in the fridge. Preheat oven to 210°C. Rolled down pastry on dusted flour surface and laid in the tart pans, prick the bottom of the pastry. In a bowl mix together egg, ricotta and sugar. Add pine nuts and stir. Pour equally batter in tart pans (3/4 filled) and top with a half fig. Bake for 30 minutes or until nicely golden on top. Remove from oven, turn out from tart pan and let cool on a wire rack.

I have been seeing loads of figs at the fruit shop but no one in the family adores them that much. Now I wish I had bought some before they all went away, so I could attempt this fabulous sounding tart. We had a beautiful warm day today with a gentle cool breeze and I though, actually, I really do love autumn too :) shaz

Vanille, the photographs are just mind blowing! Love all of them and every bit of them. The tartlets are so pretty and so is the tray. I love figs. They are one of the most sensuous fruits I would say. Unfortunately we get them for only a tiny little window during the fall. we have been planning to plant a tree and we really have to. Soma

Upside down girl

Those tartlets are gorgeous, just the kind of thing I could go for right now. I love that they have pine nuts and ricotta, I’m loving those ingredients right now (and of course figs!) :) milliemirepoix

I have been enjoying the first figs too, your tartelettes are beautiful :-) ciao alessandra Alessandra

*Sometimes I think you live in Eden instead of New Zealand. Is there a season by you that doesn’t boast some incredible local ingredient? I’d be amazed if there was. Fig ricotta tart with pine nuts is a dessert that’s been on my radar for ages, though last year was the first time I’d seen fresh figs at a market (and the first time I ate them!). Maybe when we move to North Carolina, we’ll be blessed with figs and I can break out your recipe. Cheers, *Heather** heather

Kiwileeks, thank you. Shaz, how is that possible not to like figs ?! It’s true that the season is short, so better not to wait too long… Soma, thank you. I’ve also seen young fig trees sold at the farmers market here. Should be fearless and buy one, but read it’s not easy to grow… Upside down girl, merci à toi et bienvenue ! Millie, thank you ! Alessandra, thanks ! Heather, honestly NZ is quite spoilt on that matter. I’m sure there’ll be figs and many more to enjoy in your new location ! Vanille

These tartlets are works of art, Vanille! They look amazing, so pretty! I love figs! Patricia Scarpin

Can’t wait to get home & snaffle some figs…these look amazing! Those little tartlets look just delectable! mairi29

Miam miam !!! ThomNam

Patricia, thank you! Your words mean a lot to me. Mairi, thank you. Soon, you’ll directly jump from Spring to Autumn ;) ThomNam, merci. MyCookingHut, thank you ! Vanille

Beautiful post! That photo of the figs in the bowl is beautiful. I also adore figs and had been away from them for a long time. The little tarts are so sweet and I am putting this one in my bookmark file. Are figs a fall fruit? I’m going to look that up…I need a dessert for next weekend but here it is spring… Snippets of Thyme

I am so happy I found your site through Saveur - GORGEOUS! I love figs, and cannot wait for our season to start; in three months! :( Chez Us
