Mon Petit Plaisir à Moi

It’s not the first time I go to the supermarket and then I’m puzzled in front of an empty shelf where the rice is supposed to be stocked. I can read instead a little note to apologize for the rice shortage. That’s a global issue, I know… The problem is instinctively, next time I’ll buy a lot when it will be available and make this way, my own stock.

I feel that’s not the right behaviour, so I try now as much as I can not to throw away leftover rice. Then, the question is what should I do with it ?

My first suggestion is to prepare the most delicious comfort dessert: riz au lait !- or creamy rice.

The way to make it, reminds me a pot-pourri – except that you can eat it this one ! – just drop in flavors you like with sugar and milk and you will get the best riz au lait customized to your taste !

For me it’s flavored with star anise, vanilla bean, and orange rind.

Usually, riz au lait is made from uncooked rice, but this version is equally good and probably quicker to make as the rice has been already cooked a first time.

That’s not Paprika’s favorite dessert so this my little pleasure…

Riz au lait (Makes 4)

125g cooked rice (I did it with thaï rice leftover)
320ml milk
1 vanilla bean split into two
1 star anise
Half orange rind (finely grated + a piece)
50g caster sugar
A handful of dry grapes
In a pan pour milk over the rice, add sugar, star anise and a piece of orange rind // Cover and simmer over low fire for 1 hour or until milk is almost fully evaporated // Stir regularly to check consistency // Then remove from fire and take off orange rind, vanilla bean (eventually scrape remaining vanilla seeds from the bean) and star anise // Add finely grated orange rind, dry grapes and mix thoroughly // Cool completely before serving

Toujours En Demande (TED)

First of all I have to update my post of 23rd Sept. where I speak about bus strike…How should I formulate that…maybe I praised too much…and Go Wellington decided to re-conduct the strike today. And this time, no bus at all ! A real strike. So no comment about this topic anymore…

Anyway, this post is not about strike, but about ideas.

Thanks to Paprika, I discovered recently Ted. But you probably already know Ted. No, it’s not someone. Ted stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design and Ted Talks are just great ! Not really new, as it started in 1984. The motto ? ‘ideas worth spreading’.

These talks are just an opportunity to broaden your mind to a big range of topics and I like it !

If you don’t know Ted yet, I really encourage you to go and check their site and specially in architecture, F. Ghery’s interview and his sense of humour, in science Jill Bolte Taylor and her moving presentation about brain, and in music Benjamin Zander‘s passionate talk…

But there are so many other interesting topics, so I let you discover them by your own !

Après la Pluie, le Beau Temps et Encore la Pluie !

Next Sunday, the 2008 Spring Festival will start at the Botanic Garden. That’s a good news, because I have enough of winter !

Yesterday, blue sky and sunshine, were both combined to remind in a beautiful way that Spring is back. So I went for a walk in the neighborhood, with my camera in my bag.

Cherry and peach trees everywhere are blooming and I was lucky to see a bunch of iris (my favorite !).

I’m still amazed here with the flora diversity and how is it accessible.

Then I came back home and I thought to join later Paprika for our ritual outdoor lunch on the ‘city to sea’ bridge. Unluckily, there was a bus strike…

Anyway, down here, strikes unlike in France don’t take users hostage. People can still go to work and come back home by bus. Service is interrupted only between 10 AM and 3PM !

Today rain and wind. Gale up to 120km/h !
