Since I started this blog, it was obvious for me to include a category called ‘architecture and design’ as I like it. But what is obvious to you is probably not for everyone.

I suscribed to Expat Blog and I realised afterwards that I probably don’t give satisfaction to readers searching for information about New Zealand, despite the couple of posts in Nature and outdoors category, which is genuinely related to New Zealand…

My first idea was to show examples of traditional architecture. The natural beauty of New Zealand is told so many times and through so much more professional ways (TV reportage, books…), that it could be more interesting to look through the architectural prism, that did not made New Zealand renowned.

When I exposed my idea to Paprika, he didn’t feel so enthusiastic and threw the truth in my face: who care about old buildings ?!

Unfortunately, I had to admit he’s right…

I guess readers expect to see nice landscapes, anecdotes, traditions (about Maori culture), but certainly not to know that this building was shot in Wellington CBD and that its called Hibernian House, from the Catholic Hibernian society who bought it in 1985. Readers are neither interested in the fact that this Art Deco Style building was designed by architect F.D. Stewart in 1930 for Hamilton Nimmo. But you never know, if you come around, at the corner of Bond and Willis streets, stop to stare at windows shop and look above the canopy, you will see this nice brick facade. I like the detail of the stairs running on the facade.

If you have read all these uninteresting lines, you really deserve a goody ! So let’s watch this spoof advertisement from an Australian TV show called The Gruen Transfer. The idea is to sell the unsellable, like New Zealand invaded by Australia ! You’ll be delighted to see New Zealand landscapes and Down Under’s sense of humour ! Click on Pitch-2 after the headline “Which agency’s ad convinces us more that we need to invade New Zealand?

Welly & The Pecha Kucha

What Pecha Kucha is ?

Pecha Kucha is Japanese for chatter. Originally organized by architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, based in Japan, Pecha Kucha night is an unconventional and creative way of presentation. Each performer presents his work through 20 slides, shown and commented for 20 seconds each -6 minutes and 40 seconds in total !

A session will be held on 30th July in Wellington and I’m really excited to see it !

Launched in 2003, the phenomenon became increasingly popular and it’s organized now, in more than 130 cities worldwide ! Check on Pecha Kucha website where and when will be the next session in your city !

Rainbow In My Plate

I have to confess that I’m a bit jealous about all these cooking blogs I read with colorful summer fruits everywhere ! Here it’s winter and wind, rain and even storm are bursting out !…

A good way to tolerate this season is to think ahead -Soon it’ll be Spring !- and to distil good mood in every day life !

When days are not so sunny, colors may help to brighten up. Colours hit the headlines of the last edition of a kiwi deco magazine. I discovered a smart and colourful set of dishes designed by Morph for Joseph Joseph; And to gather my thoughts, I purchased lately a colourful Paperchase notebook. So colours were just missing from my plate ! They are known to interact on your appetite and I’ve read an interesting post about it on ColourLovers. Experiments show that people’s taste is more influenced by what they see than what they truly taste ! Amazing ! Smurf’s colour remains to avoid anyway in food coloring -Except maybe for kids…

Gnocchi are a good comfort food and to make it more fun, I dyed them ! One carrot and one beetroot were enough to make these bi-color gnocchi. A pity that I didn’t have spinach, I would have done it ! I did a simple and creamy mushroom sauce to eat with and that was fine. I didn’t taste so strongly the beet -probably distracted by the color- and that was perfect.

Beet & carrot gnocchi
400g potatoes
1 carrot
1 small beetroot
2 eggs
145g flour
1 tsp olive oil
Salt
Peel potatoes and carrot and halve them // Rinse beetroot // Steam potatoes, carrot and non-peeled beetroot until tenderly cooked // Let them cool then peel beetroot // Mash vegetables separately // Mix 2/3 potatoes with mashed beet and 1/3 with mashed carrot // In each part add one egg and in proportion flour, oil and salt // Kneat quickly to form a dough non sticky but slightly wet // Divide the dough in equal parts // Then on a floury surface, roll each piece into a long snake shape (about 1-cm diameter) // Then divide into regular pieces (about 2-cm long) // Customize your gnocchi with a fork if you wish // Keep them on a dusted flour plate or dish // In a large saucepan, bring water to a boil // Pour gnocchi and let them cook until they rise to the surface of the boiling water // Serve with your favorite pasta sauce.

Still about colour, did you see these new born twins from a mix-raced German couple ? Surprising, no ?!
